The African American/Black/of African Descent Behavioral Health Racial Equity Collaborative (BHREC) was a turning point for our agency.
At first I thought it was a big commitment of staff hours and energy. As it turned out, it was an opportunity that opened our minds and hearts to fully embrace and integrate our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We made dynamic connections with others that have enriched our agency. We created our IDEA Collaborative volunteer staff who meet monthly to focus our vision and steer our efforts in DEI. We highlight diverse communities and cultures in our Voices of Color Panels. We now offer paid internships with our HeartLand Heroes. Besides offering staff cultural engagement trainings, we have boosted our workforce by revamping our job descriptions and hiring procedures. It was a wonderful benefit and we look forward to the new BHREC planned for 2025 for the Latino/Latinx/Latine/Hispanic communities.

The California Youth Opioid Response (YOR CA) project has provided the opportunity for
Another Choice Another Chance (ACAC) to develop new partnerships to implement prevention activities in the community that focus on physical and mental wellness through sports and dance. Participation in sports has been shown to reduce the risk of overall illicit drug use, but particularly during high school; suggesting that this may be a critical period to reduce or prevent the use of drugs through sport. Additionally, dance and movement can help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression and improve mood. Physical movement can also help boost energy and promote better sleep. ACAC has also been able to host mobile drop-in centers that provide a safe space for youth to engage in positive social activities that promote the importance of mental and physical wellness while building healthy connections.
